Solar Energy History-A Potted History Of Solar Power

October 9th, 2009 · No Comments · solar energy

People have been using solar energy long before other fuels such as coal; oil and gas were even discovered.

Ancient Greeks used this technology as early as 400 BC for heating their homes. They built entire cities of these types of houses.

Solar energy history started when the Romans took the use of solar energy a step further by introducing glass windows, thereby trapping the heat of the sun. They were the first people to use glasshouses to create the right environment for plants and seeds to grow.

History of solar energy as we know it began in the 1860s when August Mouchet invented a solar-powered motor as well as a solar steam engine. He also made ice from solar energy by connecting his steam engine to a refrigeration device.

In the 1870s, William Adams created what is known The Power Tower Concept. He used mirrors and solar energy to power a steam turbine. His concept is still in use today.

The first solar was created by Charles Fritz in 1883. In the later 1880s, Charles Tellier heated water with the help of his solar energy system.

Awareness about depleting resources of energy was there in the 1800s. Yet people still chose to use designs that ran on other forms of energy..

The first silicon solar cell was developed in 1953, by Bell Laboratories scientists Gerald Pearson, Daryl Chapin and Calvin Fuller. It was capable of generating a measurable electric current.

The US government took the initiative of developing the solar electric cell that Bell Laboratories had produced, after oil prices nearly doubled in October 1973.

However, it hasn’t been until recently that the solar industry has started to take off.

The cost of implementing renewable energy technology is getting lower as applications are mass-produced and the price of fossil fuels rises. The role of photovoltaic energy systems for electricity generation will definitely increase in the future. Check out a solar energy house.
