How does Wind Energy Work-Wind Powered Energy and Your Home

The power of wind has been used for centuries. The Chinese and Babylonians used it for crop irrigation four thousand years ago. It is used in windmills for grinding grain into flour and for the propulsion of ships with sails.

Wind energy can be harnessed by placing a wind generator/propeller on top of a tall tower in favorable locations. Electricity is produced when the wind moves the propeller and the propeller powers the generator.

A typical wind energy generator has a tall bladed wind turbine, with fairly long and slender blades. The blades should be rigid and not heavy; therefore, materials like fiberglass and aluminum are used. The blades are very aerodynamic in nature; they create as much rotation as possible when the wind passes through them. The amount of energy that can be generated depends on the size of the propellers and. of course, the speed of wind.

Wind turbines should be placed in areas where they can perform efficiently. Wide open fields where there is little interference in the flow of wind and offshore are optimal locations.
When multiple wind generation turbines are used together, it is called a wind farm. The ideal location for a wind farm is along the coast, wide open plains, on top of rounded hills and in gaps between mountains.

To ensure that a wind farm produces sufficient energy the wind speed should be good. By increasing the height of a turbine you can considerably increase the amount of energy produced.
There are many obvious advantages of wind energy. It is free to harness and there are no green house gases or other harmful side effects.

It does provide a real alternative for the ordinary householder concerned about rising energy costs and harmful pollution of the planet.
